Frequently Asked Questions
Most frequently asked questions about therapy and their answers
What can I expect from therapy?
Once we connect, we will get your contact information and send you paperwork to sign (this includes information about the practice, confidentiality policies, telehealth policies etc.). We will schedule a time to meet that works for us both.
It is difficult to explain exactly what your therapy sessions will look like, as this is different depending on your needs. One of the most important aspects of being successful in therapy is a positive relationship between therapist and client. We work to establish this by creating a safe and open space for you to explore your needs.
How long is a therapy session?
A typical therapy session lasts 50 minutes. There are exceptions to this, including the child’s age and needs, and personal preference. We are happy to work with you to provide you with what you need.
Can I come to therapy with my child?
We believe in working with the entire family whenever possible. During our therapy session, we ask that parents are not involved unless we have planned a family session. This gives children the space they need to express themselves and their emotions freely. We will follow up with parents/families as needed throughout the process and are always open to families reaching out!
Can you tell me what happened in my child's therapy session?
The short answer to this is “no”. The law states that we cannot disclose what is discussed in session, as this is confidential. Even children deserve to have a safe space to explore their emotions. But, we work with the parents to find positive strategies to help with their child’s challenges. Sometimes, young clients will want to share what is going on in therapy, and often, this will turn into a family session. If there is ever a safety issue, this will always be discussed with the parents.
Do you offer telehealth and what is that like?
Yes, we offer both remote and in person sessions. Remote sessions are similar to having a zoom call or facetime call from your phone or computer. We use a HIPPA secure platform and ask that clients are in a confidential space where they feel comfortable. For the most part, we are able to do the same work online and most of my current clients prefer it to in person sessions.
What do I need for an online therapy session?
The most important thing is having a confidential space where you are comfortable to meet for our sessions. A strong internet connection and phone or computer is also needed. For safety reasons, we will need the address of where you are taking the call.
Can you prescribe medication?
No. We are unable to prescribe medications. I am happy to give referrals as needed or discuss if this is something you might be interested in.
Will my information be kept confidential?
Yes, information shared will be kept confidential (including discussions during children’s sessions). We may not disclose any of it to anyone, unless you give your written permission. You can withdraw this permission at any time. There are some specific exceptions to this rule, which are as follows:
We will not disclose personal information to any other third parties except if it is made aware that a child has been, is currently, or potentially being harmed or if there is reason to believe that a client is a danger to themselves or others. In addition, if you are in litigation, there is a possibility that your therapy file may be subpoenaed.
Do you have a cancellation policy?
We have a 24 hour cancellation policy. If you are unable to make your appointment and are unable to cancel with at least 24 hours notice, you will be charged the full session fee.
Are you available 24/7 or for emergencies?
We do not provide crisis services and we are not available 24/7. If you are in need of immediate assistance or feel you are in danger of hurting yourself or others, please call 911, take yourself into the closest Emergency Room or call or text the Colorado Crisis Services Line.
