Do I have to be an artist to benefit from art therapy?
"IT is not about creating a pretty Picture." Natalie Rogers
In short...no. You just need to be willing to try...to look at the world in a new way. We all have the capacity for creativity in one way or another. It is about using resilience, creativity, and imagination to address the distresses of our minds and bodies for the purpose of healing. Art made in session is not intended to be judged as a product, but as a form of communication. The process of making art does not need to result in a pleasing finished product. It is a personal, confidential record of emotional states. The resulting artwork helps to process our internal experiences; to explore our feelings and stories together.
Play and creativity are essential to thriving in life. This is frequently forgotten in our struggle to survive. I firmly believe that we all have the right to happiness and fulfillment; to live life to the fullest. I know that we are all doing the best that we can in this moment, AND we can all learn to do better. Mindful, creative art therapy can help with self-exploration, self-regulation, and behavior change.
My style of creative art therapy is a holistic, optimistic, trauma-informed, and experiential approach which facilitates growth and change. Together in session, we may actively engage in the creative process and various healing practices in order to improve your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Based on individual or group needs, we work using drawing, painting, sculpting, writing, play, movement, yoga, sandtray, or mindfulness as tools to identify emotions, learn coping skills, reduce stress, improve focus and concentration, increase feelings of belonging, confidence, and resilience. I want to help you make your dreams a reality.
